Daniel Smilov: Radev's entry into the party arena will lead to shifts and a less fragmented parliament - 1

President Rumen Radev announced and submitted his resignation to the Constitutional Court. The expectations are that he will announce his political project and whether he will participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The topic was commented on by political scientist Daniel Smilov, journalist Ruja Raicheva and political scientist Prof. Rosen Stoyanov on BNT, quoted by novini.bg.
It seems to me that after the referendum that Radev proposed and was accepted as a joke with the electorate of "Vazrazhdane", he is trying to return to a more moderate centrist role, said Ruja Raicheva regarding Rumen Radev's speech. "But hasn't there been an expectation among his potential voters that he will be the new Orban and pound the table and impose our word in the EU? It is not very clear which path he will choose and it depends on who his potential partners are", she added.

This party needs to be defined. It can take different paths - one is a pro-European direction, another is Orban. These are completely different things," believes political scientist Daniel Smilov. "They are different not only in terms of the EU, but also domestically. Orban's policy package is related to the control of certain institutions, attitude towards civil society. If President Radev goes down this path - it will be very difficult for the PP-DB to partner with him. Where they overlap is the anti-corruption part. There is no discrepancy in the assessments they give, but there may be a discrepancy in the decisions", Smilov also pointed out.
President Radev submitted his resignation a day ago, it is about to be accepted. He must state what he will do. In the studios in recent days there has been talk about lining up lists, about percentages - all things that come only after he announced that he will do a political project, specified Prof. Rosen Stoyanov.

According to Daniel Smilov, it is interesting what kind of people will join Radev's team. "Are they those who are oriented to the East or not", he asked. There will be new people, but there will be many of the expected names, believes Ruja Raicheva.

"I judge by the people who were around the president when he made this speech and went into a room with him. There are expected names, but the interesting thing is who are the unexpected ones. If the request for such a large number of votes, mandates, even a majority - many new people must be found who will meaningfully fill these places", she further explained. According to her, Radev's formation will have to "somehow explain" the contract with "Botas".

Radev's entry into the party terrain will lead to dislocations, commented Daniel Smilov. "The expected effects may be two. On the one hand, fragmentation may decrease. Now we have nine parties - I assume that there will be fewer in the next parliament. Another effect that can be expected is that GERB and MRF together will not have a blocking quota for forming a government. If we move towards a government, which is what the people in the squares wanted, without Borisov and Peevski, the question is what kind of character it will be. If it turns out to be a pro-European government - it will be more widely accepted. But if another type of anti-European majority is sought, then the situation could be completely different, the political scientist added.

According to Prof. Stoyanov, it is not ruled out that 5 parties will enter the next parliament and then there will be a cycle of new elections. "It will not be possible to form a principled majority, a coalition type, and not simply create a new status quo," he said.
