Maria Gabriel has been proposed for the post of Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, sources from the Council of Ministers told Nova TV. The outgoing government has expressed strong support for her candidacy.
According to the information, Gabriel will take over the portfolio of “Communication and Information“ within the international organization for education, science and culture.

Maria Gabriel was born on May 20, 1979 in Gotse Delchev. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in “Bulgarian and French“ from the University of Plovdiv and a master's degree in “Comparative Politics and International Relations“ from the Doctoral Academy of Political Sciences in Bordeaux.

Gabriel has many years of experience in European institutions. From 7 July 2017 to 1 December 2019, she was the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society in the European Commission under President Jean-Claude Juncker. On 1 December 2019, she was elected as the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, this time under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen.
In 2023, she will leave the European Commission after being nominated as a candidate for Prime Minister by GERB, but she did not receive support.
