The main person responsible for us going to elections is GERB. They interrupted the negotiations on the grounds that Minister Kalin Stoyanov had tripped over the stone. Every time a reform agreement was reached, something came up that broke off the negotiations.
This was stated in the show "Face to Face" on BTV the political scientist Assoc. Daniel Smilov, who commented on the latest political events in the country.
"There are three reasons that led GERB to request early elections. The first is that they expect to achieve better results, which has some chance of being true. The second is that any reforms are being postponed for the next three to four months, which is absolutely true. The third argument is the "washing" of Borisov, but here the calculation may turn out to be wrong. The status quo is currently entirely on the side of GERB and DPS and they want to keep it. Constitutional changes have a firm logic. We are a parliamentary republic, and the president had too much power through the caretaker government. Now things are back to normal. The country has a big problem and needs to solve it. I'm talking about corruption at all levels. The question is whether there is good will to deal with this problem. GERB and DPS act in a way in which they clearly want to postpone solving the corruption problems. This can play a bad joke on them because it is very visible and people clearly understand their reluctance to change anything. I do not think that the issue of new negotiations between GERB and PP-DB has been resolved and after the elections they will immediately sit at the same table. Everything will depend on the results of the early elections and the signing of clear, precise and concrete agreements on reforms", added Prof. Smilov.
The political scientist Tsvetanka Andreeva was also a guest in the studio with him.
"Nobody was interested in early elections. GERB demanded 50% of the ministers, and PP-DB wanted to keep control from the first 9 months of the administration. PP-DB's attempt to guarantee 50% of the appointments in the regulators does not correspond to their electoral support. You cannot ask for 50% when you have 18-19% support in the elections. I don't think that at the moment GERB would be happy that the office is almost theirs. In the election campaign, it will be most difficult for the former partners in the administration. Both sides did not rule out negotiations after the early elections. GERB and PP-DB will have to be careful not to inflict major political traumas on each other in order to be able to sit down again at the negotiating table, but on the other hand, they will also have to show themselves to their voters," Andreeva said.
