The Sofia City Court has initiated the case against Dimitar Lubenov, accused by the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office of the accident on the Sofia Ring Road, which caused the death of a French citizen, the prosecutor's office announced.
The incident happened on September 25, 2022, and two other people were injured. The case also made headlines with the fact that another investigation was launched - against the policemen who escorted Lyubenov. Charges have been brought against two employees of the Ministry of the Interior for taking a bribe, for failing to fulfill official duties and for not providing assistance in the accident.
At today's dispositional hearing in the case against Ljubenov, the court accepted that in the pre-trial phase and in the preparation of the indictment, no violations of procedural rules were committed, violating the rights of the accused. Lyubenov's defense requested a change in the pretrial detention measure to a lighter one, but the court came to the conclusion that the prerequisites for changing the measure were not present and that there was a real danger of committing a crime.
According to the indictment in the accident, Lyubenov was driving after using cocaine and alcohol at a speed of 195 km/h, at a permitted speed of 80 km/h, while he was able to understand the nature and significance of what he had done and to guide his actions.
The case will continue on June 5 with the questioning of witnesses.
