„What the new pact on migration aims for is the process of returning illegal migrants to be faster. A border screening system is created, and within 5-7 days the person in question goes through various checks – health, security checks to see if he is eligible for protection or refugee status.“
This is what Maria Simeonova commented in the Euronews Primetime studio – director of the Sofia office of the European Council for Foreign Policy.
„The moment a country feels pressure on its national system, due to a larger number of migrants, it can request the activation of a solidarity mechanism, in which the European Commission is involved. It assesses the situation in the country and, accordingly, if the number of migrants seeking asylum and protection exceeds the state's ability to deal with it in an efficient way, the mechanism is activated, Simeonova explained and added that in such a case there are three options for dealing with the situation – relocation, financial contribution or technical assistance.
„Two years is the time in which member states will have the responsibility to bring their national legislations into line with this pact. I think I was 6 regulations, 3 recommendations and one directive“, she pointed out.
