Within two weeks, the Bulgarian Water and Sewer Holding and the water operators must present to the Ministry of the Environment and Water a vision and measures to deal with the water crisis. This includes rehabilitation of the network, as well as proposals for a possible alternative water supply, BNT reports.
A reference to the website of the eco-ministry shows that at the moment there is a serious drop in water quantities in most dams. Special attention is paid by the Ministry of Education and Culture to the dams "Kamchiya", "Yasna Polyana", "Asenovets", "Ticha", "Kalin" and "Karagyol". According to the water distribution report for September, some of them are 80% empty.
"We are currently seeing a fairly long dry spell that we have had since the beginning of the year, with a short break in May. 600 settlements are already on water regime, not that we haven't had such a drought before, we've had even more severe ones, but this drought coincides with high temperatures, the warmest summer so far. These are all factors that lead to drier, more fire-prone and more arid weather. We are currently in a series of years that are either the new warmest or are in the top two or three of this ranking," said Simeon Matev, climatologist.
