A Moldovan soldier on the demarcation line of the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria was killed yesterday under unclear circumstances in an unusual incident more than 30 years after the conflict in 1992, Reuters reported, citing BTA, citing a statement by the Ministry of Defense of Moldova.
A statement from the department said the serviceman was "fatally wounded... as a result of a shot from his weapon while performing the duties of his post". According to the statement, Moldovan police and forensic experts are investigating the incident.
Contingents from Moldova and the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria are stationed at the demarcation line that separates them, along with Russian "peacekeepers" who have been there since the brief conflict following the collapse of the then Soviet government.
Moldova has promised to re-incorporate the Transnistria region into its territory, but incidents along the demarcation line are extremely rare.
The last death of a serviceman there was in 2022.
