Plamen Dimitrov: We have record employment rates in Bulgaria - 1

There are postulates in the labor market that in Bulgaria still not working. Economists, including the Market Economy Institute, have consistently argued for the past 15 years that raising the minimum wage should mean that some workers will be pushed out of the market because they will become more expensive for business. But that's not the reason. I will not tire of arguing that there is no outflow of foreign investment, especially such as cheap labor. In the Labor Market data, we have record values that show the exact opposite – 77% occupancy in the last 2 years. That's a record. This was stated by the president of KNSB Plamen Dimitrov in the interview of “On focus“ after the news.

The state, employers and unions did not agree on the minimum wage, which is expected to become 1,077 BGN from January 1, 2025. “Nothing unusual and unforeseen happened. An existing norm of the Labor Code was simply implemented by the Cabinet Office. She says next year's minimum wage for next year should be 50% of the average of the previous 12 months as of September 1. The arithmetical calculation shows that this is BGN 1,077”, he stated.

„From a formal point of view, there are no legal problems. But there are questions regarding the place and role of unions and employers. This had to be decided not on the occasion of the minimum wage, but because of the implementation of the directive on adequate minimum wages”, added Dimitrov.
