Every Bulgarian throws away 93 kilograms of food every year. This is according to the data of the Bulgarian Food Bank on the occasion of today's World Food Day, BNR reported.
According to the bank, 600,000 tons of food are thrown away in Bulgaria every year, although the data show that 1,300,000 Bulgarians are below the poverty line.
On the occasion of these statistics, the executive director of the Bulgarian Food Bank Tsanka Milanova commented that these data are startling and "call for immediate and different action".
Over 58 million tons of food are thrown away in the European Union every day. Against this background, 42 million people from the community cannot regularly afford quality and wholesome nutrition.
Experts advise to think sensibly when buying food, to choose responsibly and "most of all to consciously make this choice".
On November 30 and December 1, the Bulgarian Food Bank will hold its traditional campaign: "Kilogram of Kindness" for collecting foods with a longer shelf life. It is expected that more than 10 tons of food products will be collected to reach vulnerable people.
