Providing funds from the state for the completion of dams is one of the measures that the working group, formed in compliance with an order of Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev from July 2024, proposes to deal with the lack of water in the country, reports the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRRD).

In connection with this, in the estimated budget for the period 2025-2028, funds are proposed for financing surveys, studies, design and construction and installation works on several dams in the country - these are the "Black Eight" dam. for Pleven and Lovech, "Hristo Smirnenski", dam "Byala" for Gabrovo, Sevlievo and Dryanovo, as well as the partially built "Kyustendil" dam wall, the construction of which began 50 years ago, etc. hydroobjects

According to experts, the "Kyustendil" dam is about 60 percent complete, with the dam wall at 42 meters against a design height of 70 meters.

According to the project, the dam will have a suspended volume of 15.2 million cubic meters, its flooded area – 570 acres.

Its water supply is planned to be up to 800 liters of water per second.

The dam is on the Novoselska River above the village of Slokoshtitsa - in one of the richest water areas in the area. With its construction, it is planned to finally solve the water issue in Kyustendilsko – for water use, irrigation and cleanliness.

By 2012, an additional construction of a hydroelectric power station to the dam was planned.

However, its completion has been repeatedly postponed - usually during election campaigns, the problem is raised, but no financing and design is undertaken for the completion of the object.

The regional manager of Kyustendil, Eng. Alexander Pandurski, pointed out: "For years now - since 2021, we have been fighting on this issue, we are making a lot of efforts, but I cannot say about a specific action that has been implemented at some stage." ;.
