In an interview for the program “EvroDikov“ Atanas Chobanov, editor-in-chief of the investigative journalism platform BIRD, revealed shocking data on the use of fake profiles created with artificial intelligence to attack independent media and journalists.
Chobanov explained that a devastating material against BIRD journalists, published in a media outlet close to Delyan Peevski, used a photo of a woman generated by artificial intelligence.
“This is not a real person – "the photo was taken from a database of generated images," Chobanov specified.
The journalist said that the attacks on BIRD are a consequence of the platform's investigations that affect the interests of influential figures. Among the latest projects are revelations about the properties of top prosecutors, including Borislav Sarafov, and dubious income related to companies such as “Union Ivkoni“.
“We have clearly stepped on someone's toes“, Chobanov added, mentioning that their investigations are based on donations and public records.
Chobanov categorically rejected allegations of dependence on oligarchs or foundations such as “Open Society“. He stressed that BIRD is mainly funded through donations from over 500 regular supporters and grants for specific projects, such as the analysis of property declarations of magistrates.
Atanas Chobanov criticized the practices of the prosecutor's office, calling them a “system of control through compromising evidence“. He expressed concerns that the information collected in the Petyo Euroto case is being used to blackmail and control judges and politicians.
