“The reason for postponing the request for the convergent report after February 18 is to pass the BSP Congress, which is on February 15”. This was stated by MP Andrey Tsekov from PP-DB in the program “Offensive with Lyubo Ognyanov” on NOVA NEWS.
“If this government does not request a convergent report, this will most likely be the first and most valid reason for a vote of no confidence. Ultimately, we are the opposition for this, in order to monitor whether the government adheres to every single moment of an otherwise euphonious-sounding coalition platform. We will hold them accountable”, said Tsekov.
According to him, because the BSP are sensitive to the euro, a falsehood is being promoted – that Bulgaria does not meet the requirements. “The average annual inflation for 2024 for Bulgaria is 2.6%, and the average annual inflation of the three best-represented countries is 2.5% - so far the statement is true. But the criterion says that if one of the best-performing countries differs significantly in the inflation index compared to the average for the eurozone, it is not included in the equation. In this case, this is Lithuania, which has 1.5% lower inflation than the eurozone country. If we exclude Lithuania, it turns out that Bulgaria exactly meets the price stability criterion, which means that a convergence report can be requested today,” said Tsekov.
“I attribute the reason for not requesting the report today to a gesture from GERB to their coalition partner – BSP. They are waiting for the election of the chairman to pass. Because if the BSP currently makes a sharp turn towards the eurozone, most likely the candidate for chairman who does this will lose the leadership battle”, said Tsekov.
He defined the “Zhelyazkov” cabinet as “a strange hybrid formation united by interests”. ”Of course, there are differences, but the unifying interests are a little more. One of them is to prevent the introduction of the euro from the beginning of 2026. So that there is time for some 25 billion leva of cash in the economy to be laundered”, said Andrey Tsekov.
According to him, this money is in the Bulgarian economy. “That is the assessment of international institutions. This is the amount of capital that is stored in bars and drawers and drives the property market. Sofia is the 16th most expensive city in Europe, which is inexplicable given the country's declining demographics. This is an absolute paradox. I believe that behind the entire theater of postponing entry into the eurozone is one of the priorities that unites these seemingly ununitable political formations”, said the PP-DB MP.
