„Democracy is like a pendulum. It never stands still. It is either in one direction or the other. After all, this is the best, so far known, way of making decisions. The world order has always been dynamic and it is utopian to believe that it will not change. Bulgaria cannot choose between the EU and the USA”. This was stated in „Offensive with Lyubo Ognyanov” by former Prime Minister and former constitutional judge Filip Dimitrov. According to him, the world order has always been dynamic and it is utopian to believe that it will not change.
US-Europe relations
“What is currently clearly happening is that the Western world is evaluating or re-evaluating some elements of its positions so far”, the constitutionalist believes. In his words, the best thing that has happened to Bulgaria so far is its entry into the European Union. “God grant that this will also be crowned with our entry into the eurozone”, the former prime minister wished. However, Dimitrov stressed that not everything European is perfect and there is always room for re-evaluation.
He stated that Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov's position that Bulgaria cannot choose between the EU and the US is correct. “I am scared by the reaction of some Europeans to what is happening in the United States. It's as if they've been waiting their whole lives for a break with America and immediately started speaking out against it. I think this is dangerous. Such latent anti-Americanism is dangerous for both sides of the Ocean," the former Prime Minister of Bulgaria said. According to him, it is unrealistic to think that a separation between the two countries would be easy, quick or efficient.
Republic of North Macedonia
Filip Dimitrov is the Prime Minister under whom Bulgaria recognized the then state of Macedonia (now the Republic of North Macedonia – ed. note). “This act was a matter of principles and I have never hesitated whether the step was right”, he himself said. According to Dimitrov, any instability in the region would be against our national interests.
At Home
The former Prime Minister also commented on domestic politics. His opinion is that when you have a historically important priority, such as joining the eurozone, you have to do everything in your power to achieve it. “This is also related to some not-so-easy combinations and not-so-problematic cooperation”, he does not hide. “Politics in our country is the artificially possible”, said Dimitrov. The constitutionalist added: “The budget probably has flaws, but it is a step in the direction we are moving”.
According to Filip Dimitrov, there are several options for resolving the case with the parliamentary group of the MECH party, which was deleted. “It is important what the exact wording of the rules of procedure for the work of the National Assembly is. One approach is to make possible amendments to its text. The other is the possibility of an act that is not a decision of the National Assembly being corrected. The third – to reach a decision of the parliament, which can be appealed to the Constitutional Court,” said the constitutionalist.
