“The removal of our European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva is a natural conclusion to what she did yesterday, and which created more questions than answers. I am talking about her hasty and thoughtless statement, in which she says: I have filed a request for recusal and it has nothing to do with the recordings. An administrative investigation is underway against me, that is why I have recusal for the Chiren case“, said Roman Vassilev, former deputy city prosecutor of Sofia. This, in his words, is the big mistake of our European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva. She was temporarily removed from office by Laura Kövesi's decision while an investigation against her is ongoing.
The text emphasizes that the European Public Prosecutor's Office has applied the entire range of internal measures to guarantee the integrity of its investigations and that Georgieva's temporary suspension is the strongest available measure against any risk or perception of compromising the integrity of the investigations.
According to Georgieva, the investigation is due to the fact that she recused herself in the case of the expansion of “Chiren“, because she feels threatened by Delyan Peevski.
According to her, he is pointed out by the suspended subcontractors as a person who exerts pressure on them to increase the profit margin of the contractor company and to implement the project at unaffordably low prices for them.
“The second thing, once a prosecutor has made a recusal and it is accepted, in no way it is permissible to present facts about anything. With the facts presented by her, including the questioning of witnesses by a prosecutor who has been recusal accepted, it is also commented on. This led to the logical conclusion and action by the European Public Prosecutor's Office to temporarily remove this prosecutor. However, imagine the reputational risk that the removal of this senior prosecutor poses not only to our country, but also to the judiciary,“ added Roman Vassilev.
