Residents of the destroyed ghetto in the "Zaharna Fabrika" neighborhood in Sofia are beginning a five-day protest. They will gather at 4 p.m. on "Slivnitsa" Boulevard, BNR reports.
Their homes, which were illegally built, were demolished in April. The European Court of Human Rights and the Commissioner for Rights Michael O'Flaherty have called on the Bulgarian authorities to provide shelter to people who are left homeless.
The municipal administration says they cannot offer municipal housing because most of these people have address registration in other settlements. So far, no solution has been found, protesters told BNR:
"We have been waiting for a response from the Sofia Municipality for 23 days. We want to inform you that we have received a document, we have a 5-day protest – we are closing Slivnitsa Blvd. from 4 am to 7 am with the intersection with Kukush. Our situation is tragic. For the 23rd day, our children have been sleeping outside".
