In the program "From the Day" on BNT, former constitutional judge Filip Dimitrov commented on whether the referendum proposed by President Rumen Radev on the adoption of the euro is unconstitutional.
"This issue was constitutionally resolved by a decision of the Constitutional Court from 2024. It clearly explains why placing additional restrictions on the date for entering the euro is inadmissible, since this issue has been resolved by the treaty. There were some voices that this decision was made on the occasion of another issue, but now the issue was different."
Dimitrov also commented on the arguments that the referendum could not be held.
"The request for a referendum has no subject, since the question of how, when and under what conditions to enter the eurozone has been resolved with the signing and ratification of the Treaty on Bulgaria's Participation in the European Union plus the derogations to it. The actions related to the adoption of the euro have already been taken. We are waiting for the last step, which is the convergence report. After it, we are already on track, that is, there is nothing to ask."
"There is no date, there are certain conditions that have already been met. We can ask ourselves this question again and again. The President will receive an answer from the National Assembly, but it is quite possible that this answer will be challenged. Then he will receive an answer from the Constitutional Court. "I cannot predict the future, but I think it is clear to any reasonable lawyer that this answer will be negative," said Dimitrov regarding the lack of a specific date that would bind us to adopting the euro.
