A part of the suspended ceiling of a classroom in the Music Building of the Sofia University “Lyuben Karavelov“ fell during a lesson yesterday in Plovdiv.

No children were injured. The building was repaired 3 years ago with European funds for over 2.4 million leva.

Ivaylo Dimov, the school's principal, explained: “At the 20th minute of the second lesson, the ceiling collapsed on 23 children from grade 10A. The colleague who was in the lesson dealt with the situation adequately. One of the children was slightly caught by the falling objects, but there were no injuries. The students got away with nothing but a fright.”

There will be no classes in the entire building in rooms with such suspended ceilings today.

The Mayor of Plovdiv Kostadin Dimitrov added: “Yesterday we received a signal from the director and we reacted immediately. We are checking whether the rest of the tray meets the requirements. We will meet with the owner of the contractor company. This happened three years ago in the previous term – I have nothing to do with this repair, but I have everything to do with the people who carried out the repair being investigated, and if necessary – we will file a report with the prosecutor's office.”

”Yesterday the contractor company came and repaired what had collapsed. They will undertake the repair. The students must move to the other building,” he also explained to Nova TV.
