The main merit is ours and we should have a little more self-confidence - all Bulgarians. There is a very solid national effort, which continued during a period of de facto anarchy in our country. This was stated to the Bulgarian National Radio by EPP MEP Radan Kanev about the last steps before our country's entry into the eurozone.
Romania has long wanted to enter the eurozone, but its deficit is 9.5%, and austerity policies in today's political world do not seem possible. Poland, which is often given as the best example of economic development in Central and Eastern Europe, and for a period of 20 years, also systematically does not meet the criteria for the eurozone, the MEP gave examples for comparison.
"It cannot be irreversible, because the famous convergence report is the beginning of a quick procedure, but it is the beginning", Kanev specified. According to him, a veto by a country would be extremely surprising, but theoretically a unanimous decision should be made.
However, Kanev was surprised by the position of our head of state in relation to entering the eurozone, because "he has consistently supported the policy of Bulgaria joining the eurozone at the first possible moment".
"He is entering a boycott mode of national priorities. There is no good explanation for this "reversal" of the head of state's position. What is he boycotting – he must answer."
Regarding the PP's intention to submit a vote of no confidence in the "Zhelyazkov" government, the MEP highlighted as a "real, genuine problem" that "this conversation is obviously not being held within the PP-DB coalition, but is being held by one of the parties in the coalition through the media".
Regarding the issue of relations between the PP and "Vazrazhdane" Kanev pointed out that there is a different view in the coalition about the degree of cooperation between them. According to him, "Vazrazhdane" is a party that is actively fighting to leave the EU and NATO – "moves with disastrous, incalculable consequences" for the economy and security, and because of the diametrically opposed goals, he cannot imagine "any form of cooperation".
If there are signatures from "Vazrazhdane" under the motion for a vote of no confidence, it will be a political mistake with very serious consequences for the PP-DB, the MEP warned.
"Vazrazhdane" is a sustainable phenomenon in politics, which bears the marks of a clear anti-European policy, while "Velicie" has "a drastic, conspiratorial type of populism, with a series of messages of anti-European force," Kanev also said.
Regarding the messages of distinction between the PP and DB by the leader of GERB, Radan Kanev, emphasized that "this type of intrigue, overthrow of Borisov" has been familiar to him since 2009. According to him, "Borisov is trying to spin fast enough to be able to kiss Ursula von der Leyen, Trump and Orban simultaneously within an hour".
Currently, there are no major elections for anyone in Bulgarian politics. The landscape is extremely difficult, the MEP commented on the program "Politically Incorrect".
Now in Bulgaria there is a clearly expressed anti-European nationalist camp, which the head of state wants to join, and this camp does not hide its ties to the Kremlin. There is a large political pole around GERB and close relations between GERB and MRF-NN, and the BSP has triumphantly joined this camp, that is, there is a clear ruling bloc. There is also a clear pro-European political space that a candidate for the presidential elections must have, the MEP's reading reads.
The deadline for early elections to be successful is the spring of 2026, he believes.
Kanev called for "to use the luck" that there is a GERB government in which the PP-DB does not participate, in order to build their own political power, since the PP-DB is far from the organizational state in which it can claim power. The period in opposition should be used for strengthening, and "a lot of time" has clearly been wasted, the MEP is categorical, according to whom the lack of organizational unity is a serious political obstacle on the path to power.
"As long as we expose ourselves in this way, we do not have a mandate to claim political power. Voters are reasonable, rational people."
There is no long-term vision and policy of how we would like our society to look in 15 years in our country. There is no way we can successfully compete with societies that have such a vision. The completely new technological era is a communication revolution with all its consequences. We are literally living in uncharted waters, and we refuse to take this fact into account, Radan Kanev takes stock.
