A real action took place in Asenovgrad on the night of Sunday to Monday, when after a collision between two cars, one crashed into the entrance of a residential building, Nova TV reported. The incident, which occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. on one of the busiest boulevards in the city, was not injured, but there was serious material damage and once again raised the issue of traffic safety in the area.
At the scene of the incident, the picture is shocking – the front door of the block is completely torn off, and there are scattered parts and spilled oil on the sidewalk and in front of the entrance.
„It was something like an earthquake. A terrible blow“, said a resident of the first floor on the air of "Zdravej, Bulgaria", who was awakened by the deafening crash.
Fortunately, there were no people on the sidewalk and in front of the entrance during the incident, thanks to which there were no victims or injuries. The alcohol tests of both drivers were negative.
According to residents of the area, this incident is not a precedent. They have been complaining for years that „Bulgaria“ Blvd. turns into a racetrack in the late hours. „After 10-10:30 in the evening it starts – motorbikes, cars, speeding. Here it is a straight stretch and people drive at over 100 km/h“, the victims share.
Only two months ago there was a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist at the same intersection. People claim that they have filed thousands of reports with the police and the municipality, but to no avail. “We are afraid. This is a key point, elderly people pass by, and students will soon be leaving“, commented a worried woman from the block.
What measures do the people want?
The residents are demanding immediate and adequate measures. Among their proposals are:
Installation of speed cameras;
Construction of raised pedestrian crossings or “lying policemen“;
Increased police presence and night-time duty.
The Municipality of Asenovgrad has sent a written position. It states that a new traffic light system was recently installed at the intersection, which functions perfectly. The administration claims that so far no signals have been received requesting the installation of safety fences on the sidewalk. However, given the incident, experts from the municipality will conduct an inspection today to assess whether additional safety measures are needed.
In the meantime, until a solution is found, the residents of the affected block remain with a broken and completely open entrance, worried about their safety.
