Today, the Kazanlak District Court is deciding whether to permanently detain the six detainees after the revelations in the “houses of horrors“ from the village of Yagoda, BNT reported.
A 62-year-old man, accused of being the main organizer of the homes' activities, as well as the two managers and three staff members, are standing trial. The charges against them are for causing moderate bodily harm in a particularly grievous manner, for systematic neglect of care, for destroying or concealing other people's documents for the purpose of property gain, as well as for obstructing an authority from fulfilling its official duties.
According to the state prosecution, the elderly were held in inhumane conditions – in a seriously neglected hygienic environment, some of them were drugged, tied up and forcibly detained. If the defendants are proven guilty, they face a sentence of 3 to 12 years in prison.
