After seven years of retirement: Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the cinema for his son VIDEO - 1

The three-time winner of “Oscar“ Daniel Day-Lewis broke his retirement from acting to star in his son's directorial debut, NOVA reported.

The 67-year-old British actor gave up his career after his participation in the film “Phantom Thread“ of Paul Thomas Anderson in 2017 and has largely remained out of the public eye since then.

However, he will now star in the film Anemone, directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis, US independent production company Focus Features has confirmed. The film will star Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green, and is currently filming in Manchester. Father and son wrote the script, which “explores the complex relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, as well as the dynamics of family ties”, reports Focus Features.

Daniel Day-Lewis made his screen debut as a teenager in Bloody Sunday before moving on to a number of memorable roles in period dramas, including Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans. He is known for his dedication to method acting and is the winner of three "Oscars" for best actor - for the role of disabled Irish writer Christy Brown in "My Left Foot", for the role of oil agent Daniel Plainview in “Blood will be shed“ and for the role of Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln” of Steven Spielberg.

In June 2017, it was announced that he was retiring from acting, months before the release of “Phantom Thread”. "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor," read a statement issued by his representative. “He is infinitely grateful to all his collaborators and viewers over the many years. This is a personal decision and neither he nor his representatives will comment further on this matter”.

He had previously taken extended breaks from the industry, including working as an apprentice shoemaker in Florence in the 1990s. “My life off the set is a life in which I follow my curiosity as voraciously as I do when I work,” he tells “Observer” in 2008 “With a very positive feeling, I am taking a break from acting for a while. It always seemed natural to me that this in turn should help me in the work I do“.

In January, Day-Lewis presented American director Martin Scorsese with an award for his western epic “Killers of the Colored Moon”. The actor who starred in Scorsese's films “Gangs of New York” and “The Age of Innocence”, said that working with the director was “one of the greatest joys and unexpected privileges of my life”.
