Tottenham Football Club condemned on Sunday "disgusting racism" directed at defender Kevin Danso on social media after his mistake gave Brighton a late equalizer that left the Premier League team in the relegation zone, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Brighton scored in added time after the 27-year-old Austria international failed to clear the ball well, allowing Georginio Rueter to make the score 2-2. Still searching for their first league win in 2026, Tottenham are 18th with five games remaining in the season.
“Kevin Danso has been and continues to be the subject of significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media“, Tottenham said in a statement about the latest wave of racism that remains alarmingly common in European football.
“We have heard and seen abhorrent, inhumane racism. Behaviour, which is undoubtedly criminal, will not be tolerated”, the London club wrote.
“Spurs“ said they were reporting the content to London's Metropolitan Police, other authorities and social media platforms. British police have taken an increasingly tough stance against those found guilty of racism, with arrests and bans, but are still struggling to crack down on it. "We will insist on the strongest possible action against anyone we identify," Tottenham added.
"Kevin has our full and unconditional support as a player and as a person. No one at this club would ever face this alone. Nothing in the league or position can excuse or explain racist abuse," is the club's position.
Danso said he had seen the comments directed at him over the weekend as the Premier League promoted its "No Place for Racism" initiative. "Racist abuse has no place in this game or anywhere else. But it does not define me and will not distract me from what is important. I know who I am, what I stand for and why I play," he said on Instagram.
