Montenegro and Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic died suddenly early this morning at the age of 26, the English club announced. The terrible news was also confirmed by the Football Federation of Montenegro. According to information in his homeland, he felt ill in his Budva apartment and collapsed. His relatives called an ambulance, but the doctors only declared him dead. More details are not yet known, reports sportal.bg.
Millwall signed Šarkić from Wolverhampton in August 2023. He played 33 games for the “Lions” in the last season. Just over a week ago, Šarkić started for Montenegro against Belgium, where he made a series of important saves.
Sharkic is a product of Anderlecht's academy. In 2015, he moved to Aston Villa, after which he was sent out on loan to several clubs, making over 60 appearances for Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Stoke. He made his debut for the national team in the match against Belarus in 2019.
