Novak Djokovic will play the men's singles final at the Paris Games for the first time in his career. His opponent on Sunday will be the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, BTA reports. The 37-year-old Serbian has bronze from Beijing 2008, but now has a chance to win the title for the first time if he takes the final.
Late last night, Djokovic defeated the Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6:4, 6:2, and after the match he lay down on the floor as if he had become a champion.
"It's a huge relief because I've never made it to the final of the Olympics before, even though I've been playing really well. Just to try and win gold for the first time for my country, whatever happens on Sunday, is a huge pride, honor and happiness and that's why I celebrated like that. Of course I'll be fighting for gold on Sunday, there's no doubt about that," he announced.
Djokovic left "Roland Garros" because of a right knee injury, after which he underwent meniscus surgery. The Serbian last played against Alcaraz in the final of "Wimbledon", when he lost the dispute for the title.
"I don't consider myself a favorite because Alcaraz has proven that he is the best player in the world right now. But I feel that I am different than when I was at Wimbledon. I feel more confident in myself and my chances in the final," said Djokovic.
The Spaniard is also looking forward to the Olympics final. "It means a lot to me to be in the final of the Olympic Games and to have the chance to fight for a gold medal for my country. This is a special moment in my career and in my life. I'll try to enjoy it, but I'm really focused on playing in the final on Sunday. "I'm really happy to bring a medal to my country and I hope I get the gold," Alcaraz said.
