Today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Yannick Siner, the number one in world tennis, met with Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican. The private audience was held in the “Paul VI” hall in the presence of the tennis player's parents – Hanspeter and Sieglinde – and the president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation – Angelo Binaghi. The meeting took place in a spirit of cordiality and humor.

Siner gave the Pope a tennis racket and ball, jokingly asking: “Do you want to play a little?“ The Pope replied with a smile: “It's better not to play here – we'll break everything.“ Pope Leo XIV, known for his love of tennis, recently joked with journalists about the idea of a charity match, saying: "As long as he doesn't bring Sinner," playing on the double meaning of his surname in English ("sinner" - sinner).

At a press conference, Sinner replied with his characteristic modesty: "Why are you putting me in an awkward position?" and added: "I understand that he played tennis as a child and I think it's great that we tennis players have a Pope who likes this sport." During the audience, President Binaghi presented Pope Leo XIV with an honorary membership card of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation.

The Davis Cup, won by Italy last year with Sinner's decisive contribution, was also on display. The match highlighted the connection between sport and spirituality, showing how tennis can be a bridge between different worlds. Sinner, who is currently competing in the Masters in Rome, said: “We are in the game – it was tough at the beginning of the tournament, but after three matches we got into a rhythm.” The event is a significant moment for the world of sport and faith, showing how the passion for tennis can unite people from different backgrounds.
