The USA became world ice hockey champions for the first time in 92 years, BTA reported.
With a goal by Tage Thompson in overtime, the Americans defeated Switzerland 1-0 and lifted the cup in Stockholm. Their last title before that was in 1933. Thompson, who plays for the Buffalo Sabres, scored the winning goal 2:02 minutes into overtime.
The USA hockey players had the advantage throughout the match, having made 40 shots on goal, but goalie Leonardo Genoni was impenetrable. The guard recorded “clean nets“ in the team's last two games. The bronze medals went to Sweden, after they beat Denmark 6:2.
