The case of the year! Death penalty sought for Charlie Kirk killer - 1

The student accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk is due to appear in a Utah court via video link on Tuesday for his first public hearing since the shooting, Reuters reports.

Tyler Robinson, 22, is suspected of firing the fatal shot from a rooftop, triggering a sniper who pierced Kirk's neck last Wednesday during his speech at a university in Orem, about 40 miles (65 km) south of Salt Lake City.

The death of Kirk, 31, a co-founder and leader of the Turning Point USA movement and a close ally of President Donald Trump, has sparked a wave of condemnation of political violence in the United States. The killing also unleashed fierce partisan recriminations and fears of new acts of radicalization.

Kirk was shot in front of a crowd of 3,000 and died a short time later in hospital. His supporters were quick to declare him a "martyr" of the conservative cause.

Robinson, a third-year electrical engineering student, initially managed to escape in the chaos that followed the shooting. He was arrested Thursday night at his parents' home, 260 miles (420 km) from the scene of the crime, after relatives and a family friend reported to authorities that he had committed the crime himself.

The 33-hour manhunt ended with charges of aggravated murder, illegal possession of a weapon and obstruction of justice.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said the state was considering seeking the death penalty, but the final decision would depend on the wishes of the victim's family.

The FBI has presented a number of leads against Robinson. According to Director Kash Patel, shortly before the attack, the suspect sent a text message stating his intention to kill Kirk. Additionally, his Discord friends confessed to the crime the night of his arrest.

Patel revealed that there was also a handwritten note in which Robinson described "the opportunity to eliminate Charlie Kirk". Although the document was destroyed, investigators have confirmed its contents through witness testimony and forensics.

The suspect's DNA was found on a cloth that was wrapped around the alleged rifle, as well as on a screwdriver found on the roof used as a shooting position.

Robinson is expected to be formally charged in a court hearing in Provo, which he will participate in via video conference from the Spanish Fork prison.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department will consider whether to file federal charges to ensure the suspect faces "the full weight of the law."

Authorities currently believe Robinson acted alone, but are investigating whether anyone close to him knew of his intentions. Relatives, including his roommate, have been questioned.
