At least 442 people have been arrested in central London during protests in support of the banned group “Palestinian Action“, the BBC reported, citing the Metropolitan Police.
Organizers of the event said that about 1,000 people took part in demonstrations in support of “Palestinian Action“ - a group that was banned by the government in July, making it illegal to show any support or affiliation with it.
The protests were organised despite calls from ministers and police for them to be postponed following the deadly attack outside a synagogue in Manchester on Thursday.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged protesters to "respect the grief of British Jews", while Jewish figures also criticised the protests.
However, Zoe Cohen, one of the organisers, told the BBC that as a Jew she "grieved after the horrific attack outside the synagogue" but also "grieved for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have been killed, displaced and starving in Gaza". She believes it is possible to "be compassionate and open our hearts to the victims of multiple atrocities at the same time."
According to the latest police figures, 442 people have been arrested for supporting a banned organization. However, this may not be the final number.
70,000 people protested in Barcelona against the interception of the Gaza aid flotilla. Demonstrations were held in dozens of cities in Spain.
The protesters called for an end to the Israeli military's actions in Palestine, a comprehensive arms embargo, a break in relations and the termination of the association agreement between the European Union and Tel Aviv.
More than a thousand people, waving Palestinian flags, joined the protest in Seville in support of the Palestinian people and demanding the release of the flotilla members. Hundreds of people also took to the streets of Malaga.
The demonstrations come three days after Israel stopped the "Global Sumud" flotilla and detained hundreds of activists.
The Spanish foreign minister said that 50 Spanish citizens were on board the vessels. He initially announced that 65 Spaniards were detained. The Spanish consul in Tel Aviv visited the Sacharonim prison in southern Israel, where the detainees are, but was only able to speak with some of them.
