The US Senate has approved $925 billion in military spending for fiscal year 2026 (which began on October 1), including $500 million in aid for Ukraine.
The bill was supported by 77 lawmakers, with 20 opposed. At least 60 supporters were needed to pass the upper house of Congress.
It provides for “extension of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) through 2028 and expansion of funding to $500 million“. USAI envisions the Pentagon contracting with manufacturers rather than providing equipment and resources directly from U.S. arsenals.
In September, the House of Representatives passed its own version of the U.S. military spending bill for fiscal year 2026, totaling nearly $900 billion, including $400 million in aid to Ukraine.
The final version of the document will be reviewed by a special committee consisting of representatives from both chambers of the legislature. Only then will it be submitted to U.S. President Donald Trump for his signature.
