The Kremlin said that no date has yet been set for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
The statement came after CNN reported that a preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had been postponed. The two diplomats were expected to talk this week. Their consultations were considered a key stage in organizing the summit between Putin and Trump, Reuters notes.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that there had been any postponement.
"We cannot postpone something that has not been finalized", Peskov noted. "Neither President Trump nor President Putin have indicated specific dates. Preparation is needed, serious preparation,", the Kremlin spokesman added.
The two sides did not agree on the date, Peskov pointed out.
The US president said last week after a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he would like to have a Russia-US summit in the Hungarian capital Budapest very soon, perhaps within two weeks.
Lavrov and Rubio spoke by phone yesterday. The press center of the Russian Foreign Ministry described the contact as "positive".
