North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday morning that flew about 350 km, Yonhap news agency reported, citing South Korean military officials.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea reported the launch of several ballistic missiles from Chunghwa County, North Hwanghae Province, heading northeast, at approximately 8:10 a.m. local time (02:10 a.m. Eastern time). South Korea said the missiles fell on land, despite being aimed at the Sea of Japan. Seoul does not rule out the possibility that the tested missile is the new Hwasong-11DA-4.5, which was launched on September 18, 2024.
In connection with the launch, the presidential administration convened an emergency security meeting.
This launch is the first since President Lee Jae-myeon took power in the Republic of Korea in early June, and the fifth this year. Next week, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit will be held in the South Korean city of Gyeongju. A few days before the event, US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
