Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shibani said today that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will visit the White House early this month to discuss the reconstruction of Syria, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
US Special Representative for Syria Tom Barrack announced yesterday that Sharaa is expected to visit Washington, with a White House official later saying the visit would take place around November 10.
"Many issues will be discussed, starting with the lifting of sanctions and opening a new page between the United States and Syria. We want to establish a very strong partnership between the two countries," the Syrian foreign minister said.
According to the US State Department, no previous Syrian president has visited Washington. Sharaa spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
Since ousting Bashar al-Assad last December, Sharaa has made a series of foreign visits. His government aims to restore Syria's ties with world powers that had isolated it under Assad.
