US President Donald Trump said in an interview with CBS News that if the Supreme Court declares the tariffs illegal, the country's economy “will go to hell“.
“I think our country will suffer tremendously. I think our economy will go to hell. This is the most important issue that will be discussed by the Supreme Court in the last 100 years,“ he stressed.
The US Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for November 5 to review the legality of a series of tariffs imposed by the US administration. The case was filed after a group of business representatives sued the U.S. government, claiming that the tariffs were illegal and harmed their companies. On August 29, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia found that Trump did not have the authority to impose many of the tariffs he had announced. On September 4, the Trump administration filed a petition with the Supreme Court to overturn the order.
Trump and senior members of his administration, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamison Greer, have repeatedly urged keeping the tariffs in place, arguing that not doing so would jeopardize U.S. trade negotiations with other countries and existing deals.
On April 2, Trump announced tariffs on goods from 185 countries and territories. The U.S. leader later adjusted the tariff rates for a number of countries.
