Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a figurehead of the radical right, has accused President Donald Trump of putting her life in danger, saying that his online criticisms have sparked a wave of threats against her, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Greene, a longtime Trump supporter, has recently taken positions that contradict those of the president.
She said that private security companies had contacted her to warn her that she was in danger.
"The aggressive rhetoric directed at me in the past has led to death threats and numerous condemnations sentences for men who were radicalized by the same blunt rhetoric directed at me right now," wrote Green, a member of the lower house of the US Congress from the state of Georgia, on the platform "Ex". "This time from the President of the United States," she emphasized.
Trump broke off relations with Green on Friday with a post on his social network "Truth Social" in which he called her "Maggie the Crazy" and a "screaming lunatic" who only complains that he does not return her calls. He continued his criticism of her yesterday with two more posts on the social network, calling her a "lightweight congressman", a "traitor" and a "disgrace" for the Republican Party.
In her first response, published on Friday, Green accused Trump of lying about her and trying to intimidate other Republicans ahead of a House vote next week on the release of classified documents related to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was close friends with Trump in the 1990s and early 2000s.
In her post today, Green wrote that she now has "little understanding" of the fear and pressure Epstein's victims must have felt. "As a Republican who has consistently voted for President Trump's bills and agenda, his aggression against me, which fuels the venomous nature of his radical internet trolls (many of whom are paid), is completely shocking to everyone," she wrote. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case. On Wednesday, Greene was one of only four House Republicans to join Democrats in signing a petition to force a vote on the release of the full Justice Department files related to Epstein. Trump has accused Democrats of stoking public unrest over the case of Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, by accusing them of fraud. In a post on Truth Social he hinted that conservative voters in Greene's county might consider running for the primary and that he would support the right candidate against her in next year's midterm elections.
The backlash from Trump supporters is not unusual. Right-wing influencers and conservative media figures have become a powerful force online, spreading false claims and trying to discredit the US president's rivals.
