Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to appoint his military secretary, Major General Roman Hoffman, as the next director of the Mossad intelligence service, his office announced, quoted by the “Times of Israel“, reports News.bg.
The current head of the agency, David Barnea, will end his five-year term in June 2026. By choosing Hoffman, the prime minister has ignored the two candidates nominated by Barnea himself.
The appointment procedure is to be reviewed by the Advisory Committee for Appointments to Senior Government Positions.
Goffman is an officer who grew up in the armored corps of the Israel Defense Forces forces, reaching the position of division commander, after which he retired from active combat duties.
The Prime Minister's Office describes him as an “exceptionally distinguished officer“. According to the official announcement, his appointment as military secretary in the midst of the war proved his high professional qualities, including his quick adaptation and active participation in operations on seven military fronts.
The office also emphasizes that Goffman maintained constant coordination with all intelligence and security structures, including the Mossad. His creativity, initiative, his in-depth knowledge of the enemy, as well as his strict discretion were also highlighted.
“The Prime Minister is confident that Major General Goffman is the most prepared and suitable candidate for the post of Mossad director, and wishes him success in this responsible position“, Netanyahu's office stated.
