The Greek coastguard said 14 immigrants have died after an accident off the northern island of Chios, Reuters reported.
Earlier, the online edition of the "Kathimerini" newspaper reported that a Greek coastguard ship collided with a speedboat carrying migrants.
Coastguard officials told the newspaper that the speedboat tried to disembark about 30-35 migrants on a beach near the island's capital. The coastguard spotted the speedboat and followed it to prevent it from approaching the beach. During the ensuing chase, the two vessels collided. The coast guard said two of its officers were slightly injured.
A rescue operation followed. It involved four coast guard ships, a private vessel and an air force helicopter. Local media reported that the coast guard ships were transporting the injured to the port of Chios.
There were discrepancies in the number of people rescued: The National Emergency Center (EKAV) said its ambulances had picked up 18 migrants, including a pregnant woman, plus the two injured coast guard officers, "all in good condition". A coast guard statement said 24 migrants had been rescued. There were reports of several children among the migrants.
