Ten skiers are missing and six others are stranded after an avalanche near Lake Tahoe in California, NBC reported on February 17, citing a press release from the Nevada County Sheriff's Office.
According to information from the resort, the avalanche fell near the town of Truckee in the Castle Peak area northwest of Lake Tahoe, a popular off-piste skiing destination. Ten skiers were subsequently reported missing, and six more were stranded and awaiting rescue.
According to Captain Russell Green of the Sheriff's Department, approximately 46 rescuers were dispatched to the scene of the avalanche on the evening of February 17, but according to the latest reports, they have not yet arrived.
It is noted that the ski resort, located near the Castle Peak area, had previously reported adverse skiing conditions due to approximately 75 cm of snowfall in the region in the past 24 hours.
