The Assembly of Experts in Iran has elected a new supreme spiritual leader - ayatollah. This is the son of the assassinated Ali Khamenei - Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei. He is the second of the six children of the assassinated ayatollah by the US and Israel and was pointed to as his possible successor.
The election of Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as supreme leader took place under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, wrote Iran International.
Khamenei is 57 years old and, in addition to being a cleric, was also a participant in the Iran-Iraq War in the period 1987-1988. Initially, it was reported that Mojtaba Khamenei had also died in the Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran, but this information was later denied.
The election of Iran's supreme spiritual leader is carried out by the Assembly of Experts. It has 88 members and consists mainly of theologians who profess an extremely conservative ideology.
