The Italian parliament has approved a resolution on the situation in the Middle East, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made a statement to MPs on the subject.
The resolution aims, among other things, to "condemn Iran's destabilizing role in the entire region, expressing full support for the Iranian people in their fight for freedom". In the document, Italy also reaffirms "the importance of preserving the integrity and security of the European Union's land, air and sea borders and ensuring their effective protection".
In a statement before the discussions and vote, Giorgia Meloni said that the US and Israeli intervention violates international law and said:
"We are not at war and we do not want to go to war. We are supplying air defense assets to the Gulf countries, as other European countries have done," she specified.
Meloni confirmed that there is no request for the use of military bases, but if one is received, the decision will be up to parliament.
On this and other issues, the opposition presented a total of 8 resolutions in both chambers, but they were rejected or partially adopted. According to the opposition parties, the prime minister reacted inadequately to the situation.
