Against the backdrop of the war in Iran! Pentagon dismisses US Army chief - 1

The Pentagon announced that it has removed the head of the US Army, General Randy George, from his post, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.

The agency notes that his dismissal is the latest in a list of high-ranking military officials removed by the administration of US President Donald Trump a year into his second term.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth managed to secure the immediate departure of the general, a US official said.

The general is retiring as the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army immediately, former Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on the social network, wishing him "a well-deserved rest".

Parnell did not specify, however, the reason for his withdrawal.

The American channel "CBS News", which reported on Randy's departure, referred to information from an American official, according to which Pete Hegseth wants to appoint someone in his place who will impose both the Secretary of Defense's and President Donald Trump's vision for the American ground forces.

General Christopher LaNeve is being pointed out by the American media as the most likely successor to Randy George. Lanivet, who has been deputy chief of staff since January of this year, immediately takes over as acting chief of staff of the Army, CNN and the "New York Times" reported.

In an article in Ex Pete Hegseth described Lanivet as "an incredible commander for an entire generation, battle-hardened and with a wealth of experience from dozens of military missions".

Previously, General Lanivet commanded the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army, which remains famous in history for its participation in the landings and battle for Normandy in June 1944.

Purge among senior officers

General Randy George is a graduate of the “West Point“ Military Academy and an infantry officer who served in the first Persian Gulf War, as well as in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the Army during the term of Democratic President Joe Biden in 2023.

According to the "Washington Post" and CBS Two other generals, David Hodney, head of the Army Training and Transformation Office, and William Green Jr., commander of the Chaplain Corps, were removed at the same time as General Randy George.

Pete Hegseth, whose department was renamed the Department of War, assured that he was simply selecting commanders who he believed would best cope with commanding the army with the largest budget in the world.

Democratic lawmakers have expressed concern about the possible politicization of the army, which has traditionally stayed out of political battles unlike other American government institutions.

Last year, Hegseth also reduced the number of senior officers in all branches of the US armed forces.
