287 are the nominees for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said today. U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to be among the nominees, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Of the nominees this year, 208 are individuals and 79 are organizations, said Christian Berg Harpviken, adding that there were many new nominees compared to last year.

"As I am new to the position, one of the things that has surprised me somewhat is how much renewal there is from year to year in the list," Harpviken said in an interview.

He took the position in January 2025. Despite the increasing number of conflicts around the world and the pressure on international cooperation, the prize remains relevant, he added.

"The peace prize is even more important in a period like the one we are living in,“ Harpviken said.

The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they will nominate Trump for this year's prize. Their nominations, if indeed made, would have to be from the spring and summer of 2025 and therefore be valid, given that the deadline was January 31.

Nominations are generally kept secret for 50 years.

Thousands of people around the world can submit names. Nominators include members of governments and parliaments; current heads of state; university professors of history, social sciences, law and philosophy; and former Nobel Peace Prize laureates, among others.

Many names of nominees appear on betting sites offering odds on this year's possible winners - from Russian Yulia Navalny, wife of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, to Pope Leo XIV and the Sudanese Aid Volunteers group.

Among the nominees are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, as well as the International Criminal Court in The Hague, writes Agence France-Presse.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9, and the award ceremony will take place on December 10. Last year's laureate was Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado.

Harpviken said the Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned about the health of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, which is deteriorating after she suffered a heart attack in prison.
