The US presidential candidate from Donald Trump's Republican Party does not rule out the possibility of building detention camps for migrants who entered the country illegally if he wins a second term in the White House, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Trump presented his position in an interview with "Time" magazine. Asked if he would build new migrant detention camps as part of his campaign promise to undertake the biggest deportation of illegal migrants in the country's history, he said: "I wouldn't rule anything out. But there won't be as much need for camps," Trump replied. According to him, the plan is to deport illegal migrants in the US territory back to their home countries as quickly as possible.
"We will not leave them in the US. We will take them out of the country," the Republican emphasized.
Illegal crossing of the US-Mexico border is a central theme in Trump's campaign against Democratic President Joe Biden, who is running for a second four-year term, Reuters notes.
According to opinion polls, immigration is a top issue for voters.
Trump indicated he would mobilize National Guard troops (the so-called Organized Reserve of the U.S. Armed Forces – ed.) to help with the deportation plan, but did not rule out the possibility of sending active-duty military personnel .
"I don't think I'll have to. I think the National Guard will be able to do it. If they are not able to handle it, then I will use the military," Trump explained.
