Charles Michel: Cabinet in Tbilisi to reconsider after the veto on the "foreign influence" law - 1

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili's veto on the controversial "foreign influence" law influence" provides the government with "a moment for deeper reflection", the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said today, quoted by France Presse and BTA.

"I call on all Georgian politicians and leaders to make good use of this opportunity and ensure that Georgia remains on the European path supported by the population," Michel wrote on the social network "X".

Earlier today, Zurabishvili announced that she had vetoed the law, which had sparked mass protests for weeks. The ruling party "Georgian Dream" however, it has enough of a majority to override the presidential veto and is expected to do so in the coming days.

The Georgian government says the purpose of the law, which requires media and non-governmental organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as "advancing the interests of a foreign power", is to promote transparency and limit the harmful, in his opinion, foreign influence in the country.
