Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei regarding the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in Sunday, reported Meduza.
„Please accept our deepest condolences for the enormous tragedy that has befallen the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran,”, the cable said. Raisi, Putin emphasizes, “was an exceptional politician whose whole life was dedicated to the service of the motherland”.
He rightly enjoyed high respect from his compatriots and considerable authority abroad. As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good-neighborly relations between our countries and made great efforts to bring them to the level of a strategic partnership, the Kremlin also points out.
The President of the Russian Federation recalls that he met with Raisi several times. “I will forever keep the brightest memory of this wonderful person”, writes Putin, who also expresses "sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the late president and all those who died in this terrible disaster”.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian are among the nine victims of a helicopter crash in a mountainous region in northwestern Iran, local media reported today. The accident took place in bad weather conditions. Iran's cabinet convened for a second emergency meeting in less than 24 hours after the death of the head of state and his companions was confirmed, Iranian media also reported. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has already chaired a meeting last night after it became clear that the helicopter disappeared over the province of East Azerbaijan. All nine people on board died.
