EU has €6.9 billion to provide military aid to Ukraine and is looking for ways to overcome obstacles to providing these funds to Kyiv. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, before the start of today's meeting of European defense ministers in Brussels.
He specified in response to journalists' questions that Hungary is currently blocking the necessary steps, explaining that Hungarian companies in Ukraine are experiencing difficulties and that there are problems with the attitude of Ukrainians towards the Hungarian minority. Every country has the right to protect its interests, but it must also take into account the consequences of the decisions it makes, commented Borel on this occasion.
Our military support becomes even more important and decisive for Ukraine, he said. According to him, some EU countries are considering the proposal of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that the ammunition provided to Ukraine be used for purposes in Russia. These decisions are becoming more and more important because the strikes on Kiev are from Russian territory, Borel explained. According to him, it is likely that Russia is trying to obstruct the supply of ammunition to the Ukrainian side.
He announced that a proposal will be presented in June with European funds to support the deployment of European defense production. Borrell supported the proposal to separate European anti-missile defense.
According to him, the fact that Moscow is trying to divert participants from the upcoming meeting on Ukraine in Switzerland means that this meeting will be important.
