Russia is likely to expand its " shadow navy“ from tankers – "mystery shoppers” are buying dozens of old ships that can carry liquefied natural gas (LNG), reports the British newspaper Financial Times.
Over the past year, a group of previously unknown companies, mostly registered in the United Arab Emirates, have been rapidly acquiring LNG vessels, shipping insiders have revealed. This in turn has increased market prices, especially for older vessels.
Although Western sanctions have had less of an impact on the sale of Russian LNG than on oil, Moscow is likely preparing to tighten restrictions.
In the second quarter of 2023 alone, over 50 vessels were purchased. Previously, related transactions were rare, the publication notes.
Kpler says the development of the market for LNG tankers reveals a "complex web of maritime activities potentially linked to Russian interests”, adds the FT.
According to Kpler, some of the previously acquired LNG vessels are now plying routes used to transport gas from Russia.
