Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has requested a phone call with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva amid tensions over Venezuela's disputed presidential election, a source in Brazil familiar with the situation told Reuters.

The news was first reported by local television channel GloboNews. The source said no date had been set for the call.

The source also said Lula would hold talks on Thursday with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Colombian leader Gustavo Petro to discuss the situation in Venezuela following the fiercely contested presidential election that Nicolas Maduro claims he won.

During his daily press conference, López Obrador mentioned that he might talk to his Brazilian and Colombian counterparts about the situation in Venezuela and that the call was expected to take place in the early afternoon.

On Wednesday, the Mexican president said there was no evidence of fraud in the Venezuelan election, but also called for all election results to be made public.

President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday asked Venezuela's Supreme Court to audit the presidential election after opposition leaders challenged his claim that victory, drawing criticism from foreign observers who said the court was too close to the government to provide an independent review.

It was Maduro's first concession to demands for greater transparency in the election. But the court is closely linked to his government. Judges on the court are nominated by federal officials and confirmed by the National Assembly, which is dominated by Maduro sympathizers.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a close ally of Maduro, joined other foreign leaders on Wednesday in calling on him to publish detailed vote counts.

"The serious doubts that have arisen around the Venezuelan electoral process could lead the people to a deep violent polarization with serious consequences of permanent division," Petro said on the social platform X.

"I call on the Venezuelan government to allow the elections to conclude peacefully, allowing for a transparent vote count, with the observation of all political forces in the country and professional international monitoring," he added.

Petro suggested that Maduro's government and the opposition reach an agreement "that allows for maximum respect for the (political) force that lost the elections". The agreement, he said, could be presented to the UN Security Council.
