The USA recognizes the opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, announced the country's Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, as quoted by Focus.
"For the United States and, most importantly, for the Venezuelan people, it is clear that Edmundo González Urrutia received the most votes in the July 28 presidential election in Venezuela,” said a message published on the official website of the State US Dept.
According to the Central Electoral Commission of Venezuela, the winner is the current President Nicolás Maduro.
The situation almost repeats that of the previous presidential elections in the Latin American country, when the US recognized as the winner not Maduro, but his opponent Guaido, which did not prevent Maduro from subsequently ruling.
Mass protests and clashes began in Venezuela after the incumbent president won the election. Maduro himself announced what was happening as an attempt at a "fascist and counter-revolutionary coup".
