The German government was not informed in advance of the details of the Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory, German government deputy spokesman Wolfgang Buchner said today, quoted by DPA, BTA reports.
Kiev apparently prepared the cross-border offensive in Russia's Kursk region "in complete secrecy and without feedback" from partners, Buchner said.
“So far, everything looks like a spatially limited operation”, he added.
Nearly a week after Ukraine's surprise attack, Buchner said it would be “unwise” to make public statements about the military operation, as the situation is still fluid.
“This also applies to the use of certain weapons systems“, the German replied when asked about doubts that German weapons could be used in the Kursk region.
Buchner said that Berlin and Kiev were in constant communication.
The German Defense Ministry separately explained that there were no substantial objections to Ukraine using weapons provided by Berlin to fight Russian forces on Russian territory.
A government spokesman said that under international law, a defending state could defend itself on the territory of an aggressor, adding that Ukraine had acted in accordance with the law so far.
