A North Korean escaped to South Korea through the heavily guarded sea border, South Korean media reported today, quoted by DPA, BTA reported.
The man crossed the sea border into the Yellow Sea in a wooden boat on September 17, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The agency informed that this is the third escape of a North Korean citizen within two months.
Every year, many North Koreans flee their impoverished and authoritarian country in search of a better life, but attempts to escape by sea are rare. Most people who want to escape do so across the border into China. Many of them later arrive in South Korea via circuitous routes.
Since last year, the number of North Koreans arriving in South Korea has increased again. According to data from the Unification Ministry in Seoul, a total of 105 North Koreans managed to enter South Korean territory in the first half of this year.
